Re: Steve Pope - Update 3rd May
After reading on the original post how ill Steve was I rang Rye hospital and asked the nurse in charge of the ward he was on to pass on a message to him for me. I thanked him for being so kind to me on this forum, the comforting private messages he sent me after my daughter committed suicide last September and the other nice PMs he sent me at other times. I didn't hear anything back but I hope he got my message.
For me, this forum will never be the same again. He was brilliant at what he did, growing his rare and unusual tree ferns and I am so glad that he managed to get the one Cibotium that had always eluded him, the Cibotium menziezii, after I sent him some spore from my mature specimen and they germinated in little ferns for him. He was extremely grateful for that. I feel privileged to have been able to do that for him.
Like a few on here, I had known Steve for many years, going back to the days of the UK oasis forum. I will miss terribly not seeing his posts on here.
He was a very kind man.
Rest in peace Steve. God bless you.

He was unique and irreplaceable for this forum. It's tragic but also bitterly disappointing.

Re: Steve Pope - Update 3rd May
So hard to believe, really. The world of horticulture has an unfillable void with Steve's passing - his knowledge and experience with growing treeferns was vast.
And I have lost a friend. Steve stepped forward to be a moderator in the old UK Oasis forum and I had the privilege of getting to know him well. An intensely private man who rarely travelled - he didn't drive - I coaxed him into accompanying me on ferny trips to Cornwall and Ireland. We met up at Kew gardens regularly - no mean feat from the south coast by public transport - and chat about our shared interests in 'Kew bashing', treeferns, plants in general, cats and guitars. His intellect, wit and wordsmithery were unsurpassed - he would have me crying with laughter with his asides, observations and stories of his life working in the media. RIP.

Rest in peace Steve. I'll not forget our interactions ever - and I still have that C. tomentossisima you sent in huge flat box labeled in big black letters:
LIVE HERBARIUM SPECIMEN
When we meet again, I'm buying the beer.

It's a pity, my condolences. He will be greatly missed here in the forum, I just say "C. cooperi"!

Re: Steve Pope - Update 3rd May
Kindof loved this guy ...urbane witty & totally PC - deeply neurotic about his ferns -which I got.. -also felt his loss when his great friend Elspeth Thompson took her own life in 2010. All else matters little

Re: Steve Pope - Update 10th May
Steve's partner emailed me this evening to advise the funeral will take place as follows if anyone wishes to attend.
"A celebration of Stephen's life will take place at Rye Town Hall, Market St. on Thursday 19th May at 1.30. Stephen will be buried in Rye cemetery (B2082 going north from Rye towards Playden) at 3.15-3.30 approx, with refreshments from 4.15-4.30 approx at the Aviemore Guest House 34-36 Fishmarket Rd."
Jan also asked me if there are any 'stand out' posts that Steve has made over the years that might typify his passion. If anyone can recall a favourite post of Steve's that might sum up his passion, wit and writing prowess it would be nice if you could re-post it to this thread. Jan is keen to keep a record of this.
Thanks
