Re: Chelsea
I've never been into the Protea's other then the one King Protea I planted 2 years ago (no bloom yet) but that display looks great. I wish I knew what most are. Anybody have anyidea on the pale yellow feathery plant fronting old Aloe plicatilis? Looks Huperzia or Water Millfoil like.

Re: Chelsea
Stan/Chad, That plant looks more like Phylica pubescens to me, a great plant for catching the light.

Re: Chelsea
Phylica pubescens can be just as touchy as any Protea about soil and watering conditions, and is about as frost tender. It does well as a container plant, and is stunning in bloom when grown well. I recommend periodic tip pinching to bulk it up and increase branching and density.

Re: Chelsea
Thanks David,All. Its another to look for at the Dry Garden. What a great foliage plant. Then,a nice bloomer too. So far,all I have is a King Protea. Not a fast grower, but its considerably larger then when it went in.

Re: Chelsea
Sorry to be pedantic but "the stained glass garden" as you call it is "Gods own country - a garden for Yorkshire" by Matthew Wilson. It did not win the biggest prize & his wife has certainly not died.
The Telegraph garden by Andy Sturgeon won Gold & the Best Show garden award as judged by the RHS. Sadly his partner died just a few years ago in her sleep. It was completely unexpected, Andy found her. This garden is dedicated to her.
The BBC run a telephone poll called the Peoples Choice award, mainly voted for by those seeing the gardens on TV. Matthew Wilson's garden was the Peoples Choice garden but only received a Sliver medal from the RHS judges.

Re: Chelsea
Perhaps RHS judges are out of touch with the masses!

Re: Chelsea
Out of touch with the masses eh, Hmm who's opinion do I value?
A team of RHS Judges with decades of experience between them following a strict set of criteria and going over each garden inch by inch, or
The masses watching some telly & seeing what the TV cameras choose to show - tough one that!!
