Butia yatay flowering
Hi all,
I haven't posted anything for a while so apologies for that. I've been running a Twitter account for Lamorran Garden this year and have been adding pictures of interesting plants from the garden as and when they've been looking particularly good. I thought this lovely Butia was worthy of graduating to the GOTE board though. The flowers seem to be perfect wasp bait too. Cream teas are being served only yards away, and yet hundreds of wasps would rather hang out on this palm than buzz around the jam pot. Beautiful and practical!

Looks great. If you just look at the thumbs and (ignoring the spruce) its like the Bahamas on a sunny day. Nice job.

Very nice specimen. In your opinion, which Butia species grows better there, capitata, eriospatha or yatay?

Re: Butia yatay flowering
Hi Alberto,
It is a lovely specimen isn't it? I can't take credit for it though having only taken on the garden last year! Judging by the specimens in the garden, Butia capitata and yatay seem to be pretty evenly matched here. There are a couple of capitata planted close to this yatay, of a very similar age, size and condition. The only eriospatha I know of in the garden is in a much less favourable position and seems to be growing quite slowly. Ask me again in another 20 years and I might be able to give you a better answer!

Re: Butia yatay flowering
Alberto - over my side of the country Butia yatay doesn't seem to want to grow, Butia capitata (I guess now B. odorata?) is slow - speeding up with more water - and B. eriospatha fastest and lushest. But for sure over the west side of England Butia capitata (odorata) grow much, much better than they do over this side.
