Madeira - Lost World
Another high level walk, this time starting at the Bar at Encumeada and heading along the Levada d Norte, this as you can see is a large deep Levada and one of it primary functions is to supply turbines for Hydroelectricity
Its an easy walk and not too long although you will need a torch for a long tunnel

Looking back to the bar at the start (and finish) point

One of the reasons this is such a good short walk is the range of Madeiran native plants on display

Things really change after passing through the tunnel to the cooler wetter north side of the island

Still easy walking

Much of the flora was not in flower in october so we are heading back in the spring, lots of Geranium palmatum lining the paths

The walk now enters a second very long tunnel which we didn't do instead heading back the way we came

Not sure if these were the dark or light flowered form of Musschia wollastonii? by , on Flickr

Lots of Clethra arborea about to flower

Once back through the tunnel onto the south facing hillside you can follow a branch of the Levada up into the next valley

Being a there and back type walk its just as easy by bus or hire car
