Fern ID please!
Hi, we got this fern a while back, supposedly from northern Thailand (long story), looks to me pretty much like Blechnum brasiliense though. What do others think? Also how hardy are these blechnums? usually we don't get below -3C here. Already have decent size second plant off the main one and about a million sporelings on the go (ok maybe not quite a million but it feels like it), wondering whether its worth a try outside next year.

Re: Fern ID please!
Definitely Blechnum brasiliense ! They can take temperatures down to 3-4C but not freezing in my experience. I have a couple which survive the winter in a greenhouse where the heating come on if the temperature drops below 3C. I have another greenhouse with higher minimum winter temperatures, 7-8C, and of course they do much better there. If you have several plants you could try a very sheltered spot if you have one. They probably would survive occasional frosts, but not a big freeze like we had in 2009 and 2010 with prolonged sub-zero temperatures.

Re: Fern ID please!
I agree with Valdy, though I would add that I tested a batch of young plants in a cold polytunnel last year and even with a minimum of -5 for brief periods a couple of times outside the tunnel all fronds were lost. About three quarters of the plants survived however and regrew well this season. It is clearly not as hardy as it is made out to be in trade though perhaps a tiny bit hardier than Valdy might suggest, but only a tiny bit.
You must live in a very mild part of Cheshire if your min low is usually -3c!! Usual being the last two years I suspect?
B. orientale is distinct in that the fronds are not dimorphic, so would be clearly separable when adult. It also looks different! (just saw some fine specimens just over a week ago in Burma).

Re: Fern ID please!
Actually I'd like to delete the last two posts. I checked the leaves this morning and the sori distribution is quite variable. It does look like an exact match to brasiliense...
I'm finally 100% convinced. The seller must have had a mix up!
