Stellenbosch University Gardens
Although I missed out on the great gardens at Kirstenbosch, Stellenbosch was a very nice consolation.

Re: Stellenbosch University Gardens
as a dutch guy i find it funny to read old 16 century dutch ( which is afrikaans ) and completely understand it
afrikaans : die specie word deur die zoeloes gesien as 'n koninklike boom.
dutch : Dit soort word door de zoeloes gezien als een koninklijke boom.
Deur in dutch nowadays means ''door ( english) ''
all in all beautifull garden. the balance between the chaotic thick foliage jungle look and neat abstract forms and rectangles you see in rennaissance gardens really combine well. Open spaces everywhere so the light filters through every single species in every dimension. The water elements, bridge etc are very dutch. Also the rectangle layouts with roses, buxus with sequioa on the background are very dutch. Alot of contrast with forms, large foliage and feathery foliage. all in all very nice.

Yes and as a German speaker it was interesting that I too could understand almost all of the Afrikaans! As Chad said earlier, it has been really interesting following this epic tour. I really must expand my horizons.

Thanks Phil, really enjoyed the pics, Makes me a little homesick.
You should have gone to Kirstenbosch, it is really spectacular!!
Lodewijk, I am a bilingual speaking South African, both English and Afrikaans and that is modern Afrikaans, The old Afrikaans, is very close to Dutch. Afrikaans has words borrowed from both Malay, French, German and even some of the African languages.

Full screen makes for great viewing. I'm going over all the photos now. Spotting the nice little touches while at the same time enjoying what acres of land can do. I have to cross the street to see my own yard. As always..lucky to have that.
