Trachycarpus. Mine is in too much shade for sun loving Orchids Carlos..BUT! it is reaching the roof and after that you've given me a great idea. I can get those Dendro's at the flea market and mount them high up..just enough sun,but not too much. I almost cut that palm down one day. I swear. I was pruning with a chainsaw and thought "so common"..but now its fiber is great. I have a blue polypodium on it..cant wait until it gets very established. Carlos- you ever fertilize anything in a tree? I never get around to it and the Orchids look fine. They only want water. How about your big Catts?

Several years back I put some slow release, two in one pellets (protect and feed) on my tree for the epiphytes. I'm pretty sure there was a bump in growth. But some of the pellets fell into the Tillandsias and burned them. Plus, then I decided to forego the pesticides.
A couple years back my friend Dave and I visited a meticulous orchid collection in the Malibu area. Each of the grower's orchids had a small plastic box/basket that was filled with slow release fertilizer pellets. The next time I went over to Dave's place I remember seeing that the impatiens beneath his collection of mounted orchids looked crazy happy. Then I noticed that he had attached the baskets filled with slow release fertilizer to several of his mounted orchids. Eventually it dawned on me why the impatiens looked so good. Some of his orchids showed noticeable improvement as well.
Last year I experimented by giving some slow release to one of my newly mounted orchids...

I wrote about it in this blog entry... . The orchid quickly put out several new shoots. I was pretty impressed with the results and would like to do the same thing with some of my other orchids that I'd like to grow a lot faster.

Ahhh I see. Imitating the rain of nutrients down the branches and trunk of a tree. There might be a more invisible way of doing that, that right now I haven't come up with.
