Cyathea cooperi status
Here are some thoughts on the status of Cyathea cooperi in my area. I hope it is of some interest even to people not living in the area. It comes from a magazine put out monthly about flora of the NSW South Coast.
South Coast fern study update: Cyathea cooperi - native or naturalised? The Straw Tree Fern or Cooper’s Tree Fern Cyathea cooperi (Cyatheaceae) occurs from far North Queensland south to the NSW South Coast. This arborescent fern grows to over 10 metres tall and is one of four tree ferns found in the region. The species is indigenous to this region, but it is also planted widely in urban gardens;it has thus also become naturalised. To identify naturally occurring and naturalised specimens in peri-urban areas is probably impossible. This tree fern has been found at least as far south as Murramarang National Park. Specimens found remote from settlement are probably natural populations, e.g. Illawarra escarpment in various places, Colymea State Conservation Area, Jervis Bay littoral rainforest and Conjola National Park.
