plants that caught my eye in AU
This is a followup to my posts (, ) on gardenweb, which were intended for a somewhat less specialized audience.
Here are some additional plants I wanted to feature, as well as the first round of "mystery plants" that didn't have tags.
A Meryta at the National Rhododendron Garden in Olinda:
Are those grown in the mildest parts of Europe? Seem like they might be found in places like Madeira, Scilly Isles, etc.
(mystery #1) What was this plant like a large, shrubby Ageratum at the Melbourne Botanic Garden?
I think the yellow one is a Tecoma, so maybe it's something else from Mexico?
This large shrub had oddly captivating flowers, vaguely like an Impatiens, but was fully woody. Grown in shade.
This is a Jacksonia...kind of like an extra-showy Genista or Cytisus. Next few pics at Cranbourne.
The so-called native plumeria, not quite as showy or fragrant as the typical one...but hey, I'd be happy to have any native plumeria!
Love these - but unknown. The label is for something else I think. (mystery #3)
Another mystery plant (#4):
I love this tenebrous looking Kangaroo Paw called 'Landscape Violet'. Background is a native hibiscus, one of the Alyogynes.
This was a very thread-y looking Callistemon. I think!
Next a Hakea archaeoides. These are from the older, more established garden of natives at Canberra.
I loved the look of Melaleuca fulgens. Had a distinctive, warm orange color.
Grevilleas really do come in all shapes and sizes, like this Grevillea tripartita subsp macrostylis:
The airy Grevillea whiteana:
Finally, a last mystery plant (#5). It was a ground covering vine that was very slighly reminiscent of Gelsemium.
I might do a separate thread for NZ, but that will be down the road. Tired of this current round of sorting through 2500 pictures!

The Xanthorrhea might be X. minor or X. latifolia

Unknown #1. This used to be Eupatorium corymbosum. When the genus was spit there was confusion and several names and several different species got confused. The most likely plant to find in a collection is Bartlettina sordida, but Ageratum corymbosum is around too. Other species in either of the ‘new’ genera are possible.
Unknown #2 is Brunfelsia pauciflora.
Unknown #3 is a Xanthorrhoea [they don’t all trunk] but I can’t get closer than genus [possibly minor?]
Unknown #4 is Diplolaena grandiflora
Unknown #5 is Hibbertia scandens

And whilst we are at it.
'This was a very thread-y looking Callistemon. I think!'
I think this is Melaleuca filifolia.

Well, at least I got the thread-y part right! It is indeed filifoliar. Do you see any of these in Cornish Gardens?

No! Sadly!
We are just a little too cold in winter, no where near hot enough in Summer and far too damp all the year round for the [mostly] Western Australian's you have selected to show.
I keep trying Meryta sinclairii [a New Zealander]. It doesn't grow enough in summer, and dies back hugely in winter.

Lets see,Native Plumeria is Hymenosporum flavum aka Sweetshade. There is also a Tecoma stans in there. That can get in time to be the size of a tree. Decades.

The one with the pink pom-pom flowers is a Melaleuca filifolia - I think.
