A visit to an Australian bamboo nursery.
Just before Christmas I was visiting my family in south east Queensland and decided to call in to a local bamboo nursery on the slopes of Tamborine Mountain, a few miles inland from Surfers' Paradise. I'm not really a bamboo grower, with only a single Phyllostachis nigra in the garden, but was amazed by what they had to offer. All were 'giant' types with canes like Roman doric columns, but some of the quoted hardiness temperatures looked interesting and I wonder if any would be suitable for UK cultivation.
This plant grows by the entrance. A stunning (un-labelled) plant, it is hard to tell how large it is from the photograph…
Because of this, I decided to use my 6' 2" brother in some of the photos to give a sense of scale. Here it is again.
There was sign by this one asking people not scratch graffiti into the bamboo
And unfortunately this one didn't have a label
But this stunner did!
And this one puts my P. nigra to shame.
There is a small river that flows through the nursery and next to this a large area had been planted with a beautiful bamboo species
Here's another giant
I think this one was my favourite, but unfortunately I couldn't find a label. You can just make out my brother lurking in the background
I love the subtle colours of this avenue
If you don't like your neighbours some make good hedging material!
This one is a slight departure from the norm. I like the name too
Here are a couple of their many shade houses.
And finally, growing in the grounds a beautiful young Strangler Fig slowly killing its host.
Thanks for looking
Andy

Thanks for taking time to post those photos Andy I cannot admit to being an aficionado on bamboo's but you have to admit they are stunning. Its surprising seeing them so tightly clumped together they must have some massive thick rhizome barrier could you see any?
