My gigantic Pachycereus pringlei.
I don't have many of the large cactus species. This one I have had 3 or 4 years. It grew slowly in ground...but picked up speed potted in good garden dirt instead of any peaty potting mix. Seems to fill out better with regular summer watering. Of course if you forget to water in a heatwave..it just shrugs. No problems.

Stan, Most cacti do better in a loam/sand/grit mix.
But garden centres tend to sell them in a peat soil. Best to repot them as soon as you get them.

Hi Art. That's usually true. But,you would be shocked at how many large C&S sold are in sandy loam.Plenty of clay, not a spot of anything added. Its a hard call to decide to use garden soil, but over the years I have done a double take at somebody's great looking cactus in pots. They just dug up dirt from the yard.
And when I think of the plants I had carefully planted in potting mixes with all the additions just struggle to survive...

Stan,
I think as long as the soil you use has some nutrients, and dries out relatively quickly, it doesn't matter what you use.
