They are nicely colored. Great for the large yard. |

Thanks Stan. There will always be a place for a Phormium in my garden, despite the many times I've had to sit and "unwind" the lawnmower after it has picked up a wayward leaf and stalled! I believe they are one of the strongest fibres around. Oh and I wont mention the woolly aphid problem. I used to grow Phormium tenax 'gigantium' it was huge, but it had to go when I could no longer use the driveway for its intended purpose! (oh and it was a Mecca for the wooly aphids). Still love the smaller variagatred ones. Adrian |

... and I think the flowers are sadly often overlooked. They seem unspectacular when seen from the normal distance you see them but up close and personal they are subtly coloured, exotic and dripping with nectar. Not sure which of our native UK fauna benefits from this source of food but like you Adrian I will always have them around. I would have thought that birds such as hummingbirds in the US find them attractive Stan? |

I like Phormiums, they remind me of my granddad (he used to have one in his back garden in the 70s). I used to grow them up here, but the two really bad winters of 09/10 and 10/11 killed them off. I think that they could have come back from the roots, but the tops were mechanically flattened by the weight of snow In the summer before my big variegated one died it sent up about 20 flower spikes, that was cool. The bees, wasps and other flying insects loved the flowers. |

Hate 'em. An unloved Phormium is an eyesore. Love 'em. A much loved Phormium is a joy to behold. Phormiums at sunset. |
