The large Queen is just to the east of the city centre and can only be seen from the distance if you look hard. I live in the northwest of the City, so probably slightly more extreme than the city centre.

Queen palms are being taken out here more than planted; they were vastly overplanted in the 80s and 90s.

Hi, it was nice talking to you yesterday. I'm trying to send you my email but I cannot send any message for some reason. Anyway, the product I was telling you about is https://www.0800466464.co.nz/misc/86-wa ... -mils.htmlThis could help a bit with the first year of establishment. Good luck with the palms!

Hey Guillame - was great to catch up with you, I've used the Vaporgard on my Queens and so far are coming through winter just fine.
I've also watered them periodically with warm water and seaweed fertiliser to help keep the roots going (if that's possible).
June summary at home:
Average Max = 11.5 degrees C Average Min = 1.5 degrees C Record Max = 22 degrees C (12th June) Record Min = -3 degrees C (3 times) Number of frosts = 9
On another note - I spotted these Parajubeas in Christchurch in someone's back yard while driving so took a couple of pics - seem to be flourishing even though it's mid winter...

Re: Established Queen Palm In Christchurch, New Zealand!
Those look great. I have read that its not the winter cold that gets them in San Francisco- its the lack of decent warm. They are known to get quite a few feet of trunk- they rot. Across the bay in Oakland (warmer) that hasn't happened. In fact the 30 year old palms there are huge and glossy green. Why haven't I tried one? They are not inexpensive and I have a terrific gopher problem. A phoenix rupicola a few weeks ago was the latest palm of mine to fall to the rodents.

Re: Established Queen Palm In Christchurch, New Zealand!
Winter has been pretty kind so far. There is still some very slow growth on most palms at the gardens including Jubaea chilensis,Livistona chinensis and Brahea edulis!!! My main focus is trying to save the Dypsis decipiens, I’m suspecting root rot. I will try to post some pictures sometimes, I love the way the sun filter through the palms at this time of the year…difficult to find the sun this year though! I have a few Sabal minor seedlings for people that can visit me during the week
