Re: Ferns of Berkeley.
Hi Stan
Thanks for these great pics. I particularly like the fern-house pics as I'm a bit of a tender fern fanatic as you know!
Are these pics from the Botanic Gardens at Berkeley?

Re: Ferns of Berkeley.
All are from there Valdy. They must be in a spring cleaning or repotting mood since that fern house usually has twice the plants it it. Last I was there 4 or 5 years ago they had a few exotic Staghorns. That is btw, not Berkeley's main tropical greenhouse. The main is where they plant them in ground or let them climb over the lava rock waterfalls. Here's a couple from there. I didn't get names. Labels were hard to find or see. Their fault . Microgramma? Angiopteris evicta.

Re: Ferns of Berkeley.
Hi Stan, Beautiful ferns and thanks for the great pics. That first fern looks to me like a Matteuccia Oriëntalis and if so, it is a very hardy fern. I grow them outdoors and they survived -18C without any protection. Besides that, it's a beauty with it's fresh green leaves and big, almost tree fern like fronds! edit: Matteuciia Orientalis is renamed to Pentarhizidium orientale

Re: Ferns of Berkeley.
Thanks for taking time out to post and name these ferny pics Stan, much appreciated, I quite like the look of that Blechnum mooreii. Have you ever been tempted or tried to grow ferns from spore as you have a nice choice there?

Re: Ferns of Berkeley.
Thanks guys. I've been tempted to try the C.medullaris spore. Its "big spore" and each frond has plenty of it. But,I have the lesser all green looking. What are the odds that some sporelings would be the black stemmed type? Steve Pope would have known. Miss that guy.

Re: Ferns of Berkeley.
I've already asked this question to Steve in 2012, he did not know for sure! I think it will affect where the plant grows, open situation or forest, mine is half black / green. Mine comes from open situation also the spores i harvested in new zealand. And yes, it is certain that Steve is be missed here Eduard.
