Suggestions for evergreen tree/shrub + Dicksonia fibrosa
Hi, I am looking for few small-medium evergreen trees or shrubs for my exotic garden. Those plant I am going to overwinter in my special insulated constructions allowing me to keep outside many exotic plants up to 8b zone year round. The criteria are following:
- evergreen - no damage at -5C and, even more preferred no fatal damage at -10C occasionaly. - exotic looking leaves/appearance, humid subtropical or tropical look (not mediterranean "dry" look)
I already have Magnolia grandiflora "treyvei", Illicium henryi and floridanum, Trachicarpus fortunei, Loquat, Fatsia japonica, Dicksonia fibrosa, I am thinking about Schefflera rhododendrifolia and Daphniphyllum macropodum, please your suggestions?
P.S. Here I would like to show you probably the first Dicksonia (Dicksonia fibrosa) overwintered in middle Russia (in my straw covering bed with no additional heating), now it is producing new fronds...
Dicksonia fibrosa, April 2017 (Moscow region)

Re: Suggestions for evergreen tree/shrub + Dicksonia fibrosa
Roman,
Daphniphyllum sounds good, but keep in mind it will become big (>4m) eventually.
Other suggestions would be, Trochodendron aralioides, Quercus myrsinifolia and maybe some nice Camellias such as 'Hagoromo', 'Spring Festival' or 'Freedom Bell'.
As for rather ground hugging shrubs I throw in Leucothoe and Mahonia nervosa, the latter being one of the hardiest of the asian type Mahonias. (hardy even to USDA 5)

Thank you Steven,
Daphniphyllum macropodum looks really cool, as well Trochodendron aralioides. Last one can be grown even here (without winter protection) but as deciduous shrub in very sheltered spot. I really want to try at least one Schefflera (very like S. Taiwaniana). May be you can recommend me some which can keep at least -5C with no damage, if such exist?

Roman, I can't recommend you any Schefflera, since I don't grow any, yet.
BUT, I'm going to try S. delavayi (probably the hardiest of the genus), alpin(i)a, taiwaniana and impressa/rhododendrifolia, since they all seem to be hardy to at least -10 to -15°C. I just need to get my hands on them, since they are now making their way to nurseries around. Just a project for the near future.
In two weeks, I'm going to do a new border (4 x 4 m), right after the Rhododendrons, that are still growing there, will have finished flowering. I'm going to leave a spot reserved for a Scheffie there.
If you use the search function, you'l surely find enough info on which sp. of Schefflera to choose!

Thanks, my problem is I can not buy any Schefflera I want because it is still new group of plants for even big nurseries such as Esveld. Even british nurseries with exotic plants like Beeches Nursery are selling only S.impressa - that is a reason why I am going to start from this specie:)) May be you can recommend few nurseries with different Schefflera, not too expensive, in Germany, Netherlands or Britany?

Hi Roman, I have the Cyrtomium fortunei next to the D. fibrosa, this stands in a cluster [3 years] and is winter hardy beautiful green and up to 60/70 cm high,
Eduard.

Re: Suggestions for evergreen tree/shrub + Dicksonia fibrosa
Hi Eduard, nice to hear you! Fantastic picture as usual, your ferns are great! Cyrtomium fortunei can be grown here in middle Russia, I have few, in sheltered spot it require no additional protection, but definitely all ferns are not so big like in your climate and loose previous year leaves quite often (in spring fronds look "dirty green"), so Cyrtomium fortunei behaves here as decidous or semi-evergreen and it is quite small fern here. I have less hardy Cyrtomium falcatum - this guy I really want to plant in my insulated constructions. In near future I will write you about the results of tree ferns overwintering, looks like I lost one of my D.squarrose, and to my surprise, it was one what I tried to overwinter at home:)), but all tree ferns overwintered outside are still alive, we will see. My another D.squarose "Eduard" now produces new fronds:)) So I will write in detailes soon...
