Hi Winter near bordeaux was terrible with a week with temperature around -7 at night and only 1-2 in daytime Here are the pictures of two dicksonia and a cyathea australis and medullaris Only the medullaris showed signs of Life this spring with two fronds starting to grow in march but stopped because of late spring freeze They were of course protected but not enough obvioulsy Is there any chance of a late growth specially with the two cyatheas ? The first dicksonia with the orange mulch seems dead and rotten I still have hope with the second dicksonia and australis What do you Think of the medullaris ?i thougt it was ok but when i touched it, it seems that the new croziers are rotten but it restarts from the base What should i do? Fertilize ? Thanks |

I would cut away all the dead fronds - once they die they get quite woody and would prevent any new growth from emerging. Assuming there is life in them, of course! |

24 to 48 hours non stop frost is too much for a medullaris! I give you little hope Eduard. |

Thanks for the answer It was well protected with leaves and a winter protection In the winter i also used a heating cable but the medullaris took a -7 first When you see the pictures your opinion is that they are all dead ? I am a bit surprised by the lack of hardiness of the australis (Third picture) |

Odd things happen. After the unexpected [but admittedly brief] -10C that Cornwall had in winter 2010 all my 'outside ferns' looked ill. One Dicksonia antarctica looked as bad as yours, but it had one untrimmed frond that survived. Two springs later it put up three small fronds and is [was? I must check what has happened with time] now growing with three 'heads'. Neil at Tremenheere took down a large Cyathea medullaris after that spring because it looked very dead. It sprouted fronds later, but as an unrooted sawn of trunk it didn't survive. My advice is to 'lose them' in the back of a border, and don't completely give up until the trunks fall apart! If you are 'tidying up' the crown be careful not to dig down to the growth point - it will not tolerate any further disturbance. Chad. |

Thanks it gives me a little hope I will continue to water them and We will see ! If some of you on this forum had that kind of experience please share ! Should I fertilize them really lightly to stimulate them ? Thanks |

I breed 17 years with tree ferns, and I have experimented a lot with C.medullaris and have tested all the options cold, dry and hot conditions, the first and the last are serious killers! G.B. has a milder climate and is much more beneficial for this tree-fern culture, I'd also wait a while for them and take care, you'll see what's happening, good luck P.S. de C. australis still seems in reasonable condition, which can have much more than C.medullaris.
