A survey of Palms in the UK
Hi all, I am undertaking some research for my dissertation on the various palm species currently being grown in the UK. This is in partnership with the RHS and I will be producing distribution maps for each of the species included. This is currently and understudied area. I would really appreciate if you could take 10 minutes to complete the below survey if you grow palms outside in the UK. https://reading.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/pal ... ultivationThanks and regards, Martin

Re: A survey of Palms in the UK
Thanks, Martin, and welcome to the forum. I've done the survey. It will be very useful to see the eventual results.
Some thoughts:
You have included Chamaedorea microspadix, but not the arguably-hardier C. radicalis, several of which have been unprotected and undamaged here for 9 years.
Also missing is Trachycarpus princeps.
There's no provision for people who grow multiples of the same species, sometimes with varying results.
A field for providing the current size of each species would furnish you with useful information about speed of maturation in the UK climate. London is full of 1.5m tall Phoenix canariensis planted 0.5m from a wall, but only a few 5m tall ones.
Butia capitata is now Butia odorata, although I appreciate that some people who complete the survey may not know that.
I look forward to seeing the results and good luck with your research.

Re: A survey of Palms in the UK
Thank you for completing the Survey David.
Sadly I was limited in a number of species I could include in the questionnaire.
Your input is valuable to me and has been taken on board.
Thanks again,
Martin

Re: A survey of Palms in the UK
just completed. Interested to see the results!
There are other fairly available species missing like Butia Yatay, Sabal Palmetto, Washington Filifera, and exotics like Dicksonia Antartica, Cordyline Australis and various Yuccas (Foxiana, Treculiana, Rostrata, etc). In case you wish to extend the survey....

Re: A survey of Palms in the UK
I suggest a useful addition to the form would be a free text field to list those species that were previously grown, but died. In my case that would be a much longer list than what I am currently growing !

Re: A survey of Palms in the UK
Trachycarpus takil is not on that list. I have young ones here grown from seeds collected at Kalamuni in the Himalaya.
I grow them here in The Netherlands.

Hi Alexander,
The 'other' section can be used for extra species that are being grown.
Thanks,
Martin
