Canna.
One of the "elfin" Schefflera arboricola's...first I've seen in ground. Thanks on a hot summers day here- 29c. Warmer tomorrow.

Your outdoor plants are kept as indoor plants over here Stan! I used to have a Ficus and Dracena in the first flat my wife and I owned The really tall Washingtonia palms remind me of the Hotel California album cover.

Its been since 1992 that these plants have been safe more or less, Adam. So,I'm seeing things at a size I never saw before either. Not just a milder run..but more variety of plants being sold now then ever before.

Re: A tiny bit of Hayward town..
My neighbors are into tropical fruit tree's. One has a new one to me. Passion Fruit(vines)
Dragon fruit.
This blew me away- Alocasia portodora has naturalized in a Hayward drainage ditch. It was as far to the left and right as I could see in clumps. I swear its true.
Here it is with Aloe arborescens and some kind of Opuntia...all growing on the edge of this ditch with cattails.

King palm street as I call it. Three homes with multiple plantings.
Jacaranda in full bloom. This tree had especially good color.

Re: A tiny bit of Hayward town..
Always amazes me Stan just how similar your pictures look to my local area here. The cars and architecture are slightly different (and you guys drive on the wrong side of the road!) but on the whole a lot of your pictures could be taken here. I must post some local pictures some day.

Re: A tiny bit of Hayward town..
I'm comparing Napier with Hayward on myweather2.com. Temperatures are almost identical summer and winter. Going by their graphs Napier has a POSSIBLE 0C or less,6 months of the year? Doesn't sound right. Hayward as best as I could make out the rough graph at 3 months possible freeze. Summer in Napier has 10 hours of sunlight,Hayward 12 ( drier climate,we never get rains). Napier coldest ever night is 28f,Hayward it said is 24f,but really thats not true. It was 18f in 1972. So- Howea's for you can be planted in full sun forever. Here, mine take a bit of heavier frost every few years..and a catastrophe if 1972 or 1990 comeback. I think Napierians and Haywardians would probably feel like at home after traveling the thousands of miles.
Although- I wonder Ben,is Napier one of the NZ cities that has tree ferns growing wild?..Nada chance of that here.
btw- My C.medullaris? I've found that if you mulch with potting soils? ALL that peat helps greatly for the fern to hold big fronds upright. Really has made a difference- but I still have to water as often, but the results are better.
