Horsetail as a mulch thoughts please
After a discussion on bambooweb about best mulches for bamboo it seem many use chipped culms and leaves as they have a high silica (as do I ) but it's hard to get enough, one person uses Arundo donax ,anyway I have loads of Horsetail growing on my nursery which is a plant with a high contents of silica also ,what's people's thoughts on useing horsetail ? Any input would be appreciated

Re: Horsetail as a mulch thoughts please
If the plant on your nursery is Equisetum arvense (Field Horsetail), I strongly suggest you do not use it to mulch your bamboos or incorporate it in anything distributed to customers. This species is highly invasive and very hard to eradicate; rhizomes need very little moisture to survive and the plant regenerates with unbelievable speed from the smallest of fragments. Other horsetails may also be invasive in the right conditions but are more containable. Equisetum telmateia (Great Horsetail) is the one that grows in ditches with fat white stems and whorls of leaves. I should think severed stems of this would usable. Have a look on google to identify the species and if it is arvense, avoid it like the plague ! I write from bitter experience.
