Post Strelitzia surprise
A few years ago, perhaps five, someone included a seedling labelled Strelitzia nicolai as a freebie in a swap package. I can't recall who it was. My first thought was along the lines of "if this ever flowers, I won't be around to see it", but being generally loath to kill rare specimens frivolously, as well as curious, I grew it on.

A few months ago, the emergence of a flower stalk tipped me off that it wasn't S. nicolai at all. Oh well. I used to grow S. reginae in the '00s, before it got zapped by one of the three cold winters, so I suppose it's nice to have it back.

Today the first flower opened and I was surprised to see that the mystery donor sent me S. reginae 'Mandela Gold': must have known it wasn't straight S. reginae and then put the wrong name on the tag.

Whoever you are, thanks. It's very nice:

My S. Mandela gold also are flowering for two years now. I grew them from seeds that I bought from Benny Rahm ( "B. Rahm" <> ) that at the time had ( or still have...) a site which was selling palm, cycads and other seeds and seedlings together with two englishman . (Dave Ison and....)

I´m looking after cold hardy plants, specially palms.
