Eucalyptus recommends for UK gardens?
I like Eucalypts and want to plant another 3 but I have had a number of problems in the past and would like to avoid these in future
Tried E gunnii - too big too quickly and I don't want to coppice or stool the trees because its the tree shape I am looking for
E aggregata too wind brittle and eventually not quite hardy enough.
E pauciflora niphophilla sadly killed by cold (I am tempted to try this again as its about the size and shape I want and its a beautiful tree)
I get on well with E gregsoniana but that is a bit slow and small for the job I want these to do.
I know I am being a bit fussy! but any suggestions?

That would be my choice, too. I have 4 here! New growth is attractively coloured, doesn't turn into an unmanageable monster.

E. debeuzevillei and E. parvula (syn. parvifolia) are the only two sp. of which I know longterm surviving specimen in the BGs around. Both are quite attractive sp. and stay either rather small or grow slowly enough to be kept in check easily. Too bad my parvula looks stone dead after this winter.

Hi Charlie. E. cordata is a small tree with circular rather than linear adult foliage which is an attractive metallic blue. Hardy to around -10C.

Kev - I don't know, now. I got mine some while back.
Mark - I just looked this up as it sounds interesting and, to my surpsie, it is the one I have had growing here for some years without an ID - thanks! Very strongly honey scented flowers.

Glad to be of help Paul.Usually the other way round. Sun splitting the rocks here. Bamboos under starters orders with a shower or two needed to set them off.Lampranthus beginning to flower as are some aeoniums notably smithii ( one of the hardiest ). DAs beginning to frond.Bescorneria sept..... starting to flower as is a white telopea. Our gazebo structure should be finished today.Raised off the ground over water feature. We plan to open at Easter so alot still to be done. Have an area i plan to sow with wildlife friendly natives flowers. Waiting for some rain before i do. Could be a long wait. Even here!. Have not forgot about info regarding SA. Potted on some aloes yesterday. Now have over 100 species. Where to put them?? Mark

Re: Eucalyptus recommends for UK gardens?
As promised a review of an online source for Eucalypts.
Nursery Grafton Nursery, Worcester. Trees were in 3lt poly bags as advertised, lovely fibrous root systems, not too tall at about 3' high, ideal for transplanting. Very well packaged and arrived on time in excellent condition Bit pricey with the P&P but I had hoped to get decent trees which I did so all in all well pleased. Below, the trees, in the back ground the remains of one of their predecessors

Re: Eucalyptus recommends for UK gardens?
Congrats Charlie, what a superb tree! Your species seems to be the only longterm hardy species, that can reach tree size over here. I know of several specimen in the area that took any of the past 10 winters or so without damage. I planted a E. gunnii 'Azura' last year, I simply liked the foliage. I will stool it every two years or so as the space is too confined for a large tree, I prefer its juvenile foliage anyway. My E. parvula gets stooled by frosts every year, seemingly E. is a genus to which the hardiness ratings do not apply, must be our wet, dark winters. After having to abstain from gardening for the whole of the past year, I'm back full throttle now and have already planted up two new borders.

Re: Eucalyptus recommends for UK gardens?
Surprising that E. niphophila isn't the hardiest as it grows at the highest altitude. Others like E. stellulata grow in frost hollows, so should be very hardy. There's probably no logic to it; just a random species-wide trait. ( Notice I didn't mention the "P" word )
