I spend a lot of time ripping out asparagus while doing volunteer work for Bushcare. A few species are weeds here, although I don't think the foxtail form is the worst.
I use a serrated knife to cut away the crown. It's not usually worth pulling out the water sacs and all the roots because it causes soil erosion.

Our total lack of summer rains stop them in their tracks Phil. So much of say-Melbourne- is Hayward like,but no fears Cyathea cooperi or Asparagus species or King palms will naturalize. Nobody to water them!
