I have been accused of not having enough flowers in my garden; of being obsessed with leaves; of having lots of leaves that all look the same. I replied that many on this forum at least would be able to ID a lot of my plants form a single leaf. The challenge has been set. The number follows each picture. I think most can be ID'd to genus easily, some to species or even variety. Up for a foliar quiz? Updated with ID's on 16.07.17 1. Salvia patens 'Giant Form' 2. Dahlia aff tubulata; or aff pteropoda or sp. nova or [not yet formalised] tamaulipana 3. Gynura cusimbua 4. Schefflera taiwaniana 5. Schefflera enneaphylla 6. Fatsia polycarpa Edward Needham form 7. Hydrangea aspera 'Hot Chocolate' 8. Inula magnifica 9. Cotinus 'Grace' 10. Lysimachia ciliate 'Firecracker' 11. Canna 'Cleopatra' 12. Hydrangea aspera 'from Gongshan' 13. Podachaenium eminens 14. Roldana aschenborniana 15. Rojasianthe superba 16. Arisaema costatum 17. Dahlia foeniculifolia 18. Thunbergia gregorii 19. Manihot grahamii 20. Bocconia frutescens 21. Callianthe tridens [AKA Abutilon tridens] 22. Trevesia palmata 23. Solanum quitoensis 24. Solanum pyracanthum 25. Anthriscus sylvestris 'Ravenswing' 26. Aralia elata 'Variegata' 27. Neolitsea sericea 28. Begonia sizemoreae 29. Calceolaria pavonii 30. Aloe arborescens 'Variegata' Please don't let me down! ID just one at a time, or at once, but please show me I'm not alone in 'knowing leaves'. Chad. |

23 is Solanum pyracanthum. I had that years ago, short lived. 20 is Boconia- nice score too. I had it..and it died when I dug it up for a "better" spot. I wouldn't mind a new try. Is the last Aloe arborescens variegated?..Its Aloe for sure. |

Actually I don't wish to be a teachers pet and upset Mo but 23 is Solanum quitoensis and 24 is Solanum pyracanthum. No7 could be Salix magnifica and 21 Idesia polycarpa? |

Post subject: | Re: Just leaves. |
I've been told off by e-mail for making this too difficult because 1. Some of the plants are only common in my garden, and 2. My photo's are rubbish! Texture just isn't 'coming through'. So I'll help out a bit. I'll update the list as we score them off. Kev is on a roll. 16 Arisaema costatum is right; but not 1.Persicaria [look carefully; it has a square stem - OK not visible - but it has]. Andy is right with the Solanums and the Manihot. My pictures are misleading for 7 and 21. Both are soft leaved with a bit of down on them. 2. Has been discussed on this board. 7. and 12 are the same species but different varieties. 7 is widely distributed, 12 only through 'specialist' nurseries. 13. Is Podachaenium eminens. 14. Was in flower at Tregrehan - yellow daisies. 15 is Rojasianthe superba 17 is the same genus as 2. 18 has flowers in it to help you out. 21 is Callianthe tridens [AKA Abutilon tridens] - love the 'drip tip'; I haven't flowered it yet. 25 is herbaceous and common [and I doubt if it is known in USA]. 27 has been posted about by Stan before. 29 is sold by Charlie, so he should recognise it! Chad. |

I'll have a stab at a couple. 2. Dahlia tubulata 4 Schefflera taiwaniana 7. Itoa 17 - if it is the same genus as 2 then I don't know but it looks like the dissected Sonchus! 25 - Sambucus 'Black Lace' or similar 29 - That shrubby Calceolaria but I forget the species. |
