Dividing Asplenium 'birds nest" Fern
I think its A.australasicum. After many years (11),the 2 plants I put in together just no longer looked right, and after many times being knocked over or going too dry or snail damage..I today moved the pedestal (concrete birdbath, with cracks so water no longer puddles) its on,divided the two with a tree saw..and not 100% done, you get the idea of the look. The largest has a foot of trunk. Do they just trunk forever? Whats expected? 2 or 3' more of trunk
Pre dividing and the rest..
After dividing, some clean up. I can add smaller things later. Ferns, succulents maybe.
This fern has seen better days...I hope to get it back to shape.

From the keeled midrib it looks as it were A.australasicum. How old is it ? Mine I've been growing for more than 15 years only has a very short trunc but thanks to TLC has a nicer leaves

Its at least 11. I dont know how to explain it,but I knew it was not the same cultivar sold all around. It was a deep green..not apple green like all the others. It has a keel like A.australicum Pierre, but i would wonder if the those at sold all over do too. I have wondered if this is a relative of A. australicum like A. musifolium? THOSE on the net also have the deep green color. Mine is in its winter green...when it gets warm and I fertilize it?..it gets a glossy and deeper green to it. The leaves can get banana like.

Nice chunky looking fern Stan I bet you have it in one of those pots that tapers down to a point at the base, if so , get a nice wide based pot less chance of being knocked over.

No,it was in a hanging wire "pot" for the first 2 year or so....then I planted it on the concrete bird bath...that has fine cracks so it does not hold water any longer. But up high on that pedestal..made it unsteady as it grew more. Cats would tip over the whole thing jumping on it. Or the high winds caught those fronds like a sail. Now,its on the bird bath taken off the pedestal and on some small rocks. Cant be knocked over...but now I have to watch for slugs and snails. I wonder how tall a trunk they can get? So far its about one foot a decade.
