Post subject: | Tremenheere an Evening Visit |
Went recently for an evening visit with West Cornwall garden club, spent a very pleasant evening wandering around and had a very nice meal in the Cafe/restaurant at the end, It was only last September that I was last there and I was amazed how much everything had come in since then. There is a small plant centre at the entrance by , on Flickr With a rather nice green roof by , on Flickr Some ponds to the right as you cross the old bridge and enter the garden, if the water looks purple - it was! not sure why? by , on Flickr In the woodland its fern heaven, but there are other things so keep your eyes open by , on Flickr by , on Flickr Camera was struggling for light everytime the sun went in by , on Flickr by , on Flickr by , on Flickr This C medularis is spectacular rising above everything but the large forest trees by , on Flickr There are also several large C. dealbata, wont belong before they are high enough that you will be able to see the underside of the fronds without an assistant! by , on Flickr Its only with people in shot you realize the sheer scale by , on Flickr Now I know many people grow bananas but few can achieve this sort of size by , on Flickr Back in the sunshine and light, the Xanthorrhoea looked wonderful by , on Flickr by , on Flickr by , on Flickr by , on Flickr by , on Flickr by , on Flickr by , on Flickr Given that Neil Armstrong only bought the land in 1996 and my first visit was 1997 to basically just fields and woods and a very enthusiastic Neil telling me all the plans he had, it is quite extraordinary what has been achieved in just 20 years. |

Thanks for the photos! saves me quite a trip Place looks amazing. Are those palmgrasses on photo 023 or Cocos nucifera seedlings? that would be impressive. |

They were indeed, Charlie. And they have grown from small 'waist high' plants to that size really quickly. |

I was 100% told by a lady working there that the butia were new plantings last year..maybe she got mixed up?..stunning all the same, there were a lot of dead stumps from various specimens that I don't think will recover. |

She was mistaken, Karl, because - like Charlie - I have been following Tremenheere for the past 20 years and I remember those going in. Some stuff did suffer in winter 09/10 when temperatures dipped below -6C. When you think that most years they won't see a single frost, that is catastrophic by comparison. The 'palm grass' is Cucurligo, btw. |

To be fair..we took some fantastic pics ourselves & I did think the butia were fantastic specimens to be so recently planted!!. Not sure of here name but the lady in person was inside the visitor information hut inside the forest. The jubaea we saw were not that great a specimen to look at?,not sure how long they've been there. |

Thanks for posting shots Charlie Unfortunately I missed the evening visit but it looks the sun shone -and all went well. Purple ponds are part of series of environmental interventions for this summer-have been variously red or green at other times.Food dye which is harmless and transitory. During the day the visuals are accompanied by sounds from Ecuador-bird song, toads and monkeys. Will post a few new images separately |
