Re: Schefflera warning
Considering every one of those nodules wants to break out and be a root...maybe it was girdled by rodents? I had the same thing happen. First a beautiful Cussonia rotted. Then a large Trevesia- it had been a flowering plant that you can see on Daves Garden- was for sure girdled by rodents.
The Cussonia had been a fast grower. Where it did grow? I put in King palms. THEY like the wet feet all year. So,I feel your pain. I've never seen a Cussonia as silver as the one I had and with the very dissected leaves.

Re: Schefflera warning
Makes sense Mo, I will heel it in the veg patch, a S.delavyii will probably replace it.

Re: Schefflera warning
So sad to see that beauty die Kev..... did you have any luck with the seeds it produced last year? You must have had that Schefflera 5-6 years, so at least it has given you (and us) great pleasure over the years. Are you going to take out a mortgage and get another one from Crug?

Re: Schefflera warning
It just comes as a shock when something keels over in a matter of weeks that has seemed to be in rude health. I would definitely be more vigilant as regards to mulching too far round the trunk I cannot believe the bark has peeled so easily from around the soil entry....ho hum you live and learn!! Seeds you ask Andy

Re: Schefflera warning
Kev, I'm really sorry to see that plant go. I have enjoyed looking at for years now. The trunk of it is huge, you wouldn't think that a little compost would cause that damage. Is this the first time you put it around the plant?
I had a S. brevipedunculata that died after I put composted steer manure around it. It looked just like your plant with the bark rotted off the trunk. A friend lost his brevipedunculata doing the same thing. I was putting composted steer manure around several S. taiwaniana and S. delavayi I have but stopped after the brevipedunculata died. I'm not taking a chance with them. I have three other brevipedunculata that only have wood chips and pine needles as mulch but they are find, so are several minutistellata and fengii that I have.
I'm sorry you lost your S. chapana, but if that species is ever available in North America I'll remember not to put moister retentive compost around the trunk of it.

Re: Schefflera warning
Cheers John it was a bit of a surprise and no I mulch most of my plants with my own compost with never a problem but I have become a little wary now especially wirh your experience. I think mulching but perhaps away from the stem would be the best bet.
Hopefully I can supply more sumptuous pictures but of S.delavyii in years to come
