Re: Climbers on ropes
I have seen large climbers sent up trees by way of ropes at both Westonbirt and the Savill Garden and this method has been used for donkey's years, but good for you for giving it a go.

Re: Climbers on ropes
Pete, I am going to give Holboellia another go. But if it dies again you are to blame

Re: Climbers on ropes
I do like my climbers. Some of mine from the neighbours side of the fence.

Re: Climbers on ropes
Really sorry photography skills but I've got clemetis going up and around the arch. The jute rope will dissolve probably this year. I wish I could take better pics and show you better

Re: Climbers on ropes
That moss on those skulls looks fantastic - like they haven't quite been picked clean yet and started to go mouldy. Great stuff.

Re: Climbers on ropes
Campsis makes a sort of rampant liana look..ah,I see Steven mentioned that. One plant Mo you might investigate? A vine native to California..I think its in the Grape family. Its makes very liana like vines. I see it going to the tops of 40' Sycamores in the canyons. Needs summer water. You ever considered Kudzu?

Re: Climbers on ropes
Arboretum Bokrijk in Belgium has been doing that for years, leading the climbers up into the trees. Aristolochia, Stauntonia, Holboellia, Sinomenium, Parthenocissus, you name it. Result is the plants are doing well, but on the other hand, they're quite out of sight and up in the trees. You cant really see them that well. Some can come drooping back down, like in my garden Aristolochia macrophylla does, and Sinomenium as well. When it does, that's magnificent!
Kind regards, Remko.

Re: Climbers on ropes
I will second Kadsura being not invasive, I have struggled to grow it, the one plant that is still alive I look at and think "Why bother" its not very exciting! Akebia longiracemosa on the other hand would look fantastic
