A few less usual plants
I had the camera out just now so took some pics of these slightly less usual plants that I have growing in the same border. Except for the ones that aren't, anyway.
Bocconia frutescens - not quite the unknown mythical plant it was a couple of years ago but certainly not commonplace. Cut back to the wood every spring, currently 2m high.
Alangium platanifolium. I cut this back each spring, too, and the wiry shoots bear much bigger leaves as a result.
Crinum - I think it is bulbispermum but not sure. Whatever it is, it is very vigorous, 2m in flower, beautifully scented, and a much nicer, neater plant than x powellii.
Solanum mauritianum. Winter cut this back to a stick around 100cm high. It burst into growth and is now over 2m tall and branching like crazy.
Elsewhere in the garden this is the 5th summer for Nicotiana glauca. Again,I cut it back to wood every spring and off it goes again.
And the giant Gasteria excelsa doing its thing for the second year.

Re: A few less usual plants
Thanks for sharing, looking quite lush there - guessing you've not dodged the wet weather of the last month or so? I really like the Nicotiana, is it scented?
The Crinum I think is the other parent of C. x powellii, C. moorei. A much nicer plant - I bet powellii owes much of its popularity to its profuse offsetting so being much-shared.

Re: A few less usual plants
Crinum moorei - thank you!
Yes, after an impossibly dry spring/early summer we had some heavy deluges that have helped. Nicotiana isn't scented but is nice in most other respects.
Stan - the big columnar in shot is Trichocereus pasacana. It is 64 years old and I am the third owner!

Beautiful plant. Are you keeping that Aloe ( A.ferox?) outdoor in ground?

Re: A few less usual plants
Thanks for the look Paul I quite like the leaf shape of your Bocconia frutescens I am guessing this did not go through 2010?

Re: A few less usual plants
No, Kev - this would be its 4th or 5th year in the ground, I forget now.

Re: A few less usual plants
Bocconia certainly didn't get through 2010 in the ground in rural Gloucestershire with me!

Re: A few less usual plants
Some very choice plants there, Paul. The Bocconia stem colour reminded me of Macleaya cordata, then I remembered the two are closely allied. In fact is the Macleaya now a Bocconia too, or was it once? I really like that Nocotiana too. I must look out for Crinum Moorei. I have plenty of C x powellii, and like it, but it isn't the tidiest grower.

Crinum moorei. I have Crinum bulbispermum here. I got it from South Africa many years ago. I have been there.
