Brahea brandegeei in habitat
A rare blue foliaged form of Brahea brandegeei and where it grows in Mexico. Anyone growing this?

Re: Brahea brandegeei in habitat
I have a few small Brahea Clara “Icy Blue” in containers. They are thought to be a hybrid of Brahea Brandegeei and Armata in the wild. Basically a Blue Brandegeei. Unlike Armata they handle wet and humidity, and have rapid growth.

Re: Brahea brandegeei in habitat
I bought a palm labelled Brahea brandegeei some years ago from Amulree Exotics. It is a fairly bright green colour and grows exceptionally slowly. But other than that it is ok, doesn't get damaged by cold here - leaves stay in good nick despite frost and it hasn't spear pulled at all.

Re: Brahea brandegeei in habitat
Brahea species of all types are relatively slow growing here in California without summer heat, but are also well adapted to growing here on natural rainfall alone. Brahea brandegeei is rare in California gardens, and the green form is the norm. Brahea 'Clara' is thought to be a naturally occurring hybrid between armata and brandegeei from Sonora, Mexico.
Brahea 'Clara', the most silver specimen I've ever planted out.

Re: Brahea brandegeei in habitat
Nice. I have a few other blue Brahea, among other blue/silver varieties: Brahea Dulcis “blue” Brahea Calcarea/Nitida “Blue” Brahea “Super Silver”(also thought to be Nitida) Brahea Decumbens Sabal Uresana “blue” Bismarckia Nobilis chamaerops humilis var. cerifera Nannhorhops Ritcheana Butia Capitata “Silver” Phoenix Sylvestris “Silver Robusta” Trithrinax Campestris Copernicia Baileyana “blue” Copernicia Alba(questionable how silver it will be locally) Seeds in a pot from a “Blue” Jubaea Chilensis in San Diego
All are still in containers, and a lot aren’t showing their blue yet, if they ever do in my wet, humid environment.

Re: Brahea brandegeei in habitat
Daniel, you've got a lot more patience than I do, I've only started with one gallon size palms. I also have grown/planted out Brahea armata, 'Clara', edulis, 'Super Silver', Butia capitata, and Chamaerops humilis var cerifera as silver foliaged palms here in the San Francisco Bay Area. Bismarckia nobilis is JUST possible here, but way too slow without summer heat so I use Brahea 'Clara' as the next best substitute.

Re: Brahea brandegeei in habitat
Thanks. I sold my last house, and I’m just renting at this point. Trying to decide where I’ll end up. Whether in the area or elsewhere. Cactus and agave are mostly in the ground, everything else is in containers for now. I wish I could consider California, but for the amount of land I want it’s either going to be Texas or Arizona most likely.
