Xanthorrhoea glauca
Apologies to the regulars who have seen similar pictures from me before but this tree never fails to amaze me. I am fairly sure Xanthorrhoea glauca should not be growing in such a northerly garden. This was acquired from Akamba October 2009 for the princely sum of 150 of your english pounds yes I know that is quite an expense but what the heck you cannot take it with you. So it was planted out spring 2010 which was not the best of years to start at. I under planted it with some dainty little plants as these thing are very slow growing. So fast forward 7 and a bit years and it has engulfed my entire raised bed, almost, it is now sending up more off sets to grab the other side of the bed. I should imagine I could now dig it up and sell it for more than I bought it for... Interested to hear of any other grass tree's growing in members gardens?

Re: Xanthorrhoea glauca
Hi Kev... that looks a beaut I reckon it will bloom soon hopefully not in the wintertime like my Dasylirion longissimum did three years ago and is still recovering. A £150 eh? If you want a sister L'ombre des figuiers has one for €3,800

Re: Xanthorrhoea glauca
I hoping for not flowering soon Andy, I always cut the inflorescence's from my Yucca, they just seem to take so long to recover. I like the look of Alberto's flowering plant and that will do for me..........€3,800 or should I say £3,800 e-bay here I come.

Hi Kev, this looks stunning! The head looks so full! Do you cover it for the winter?
Here is my Xanthorrhoea, hopefully it will look like yours one day.

Re: Xanthorrhoea glauca
I've had it for a little more than one year. It is planted in the so called "protected area" together with some proteas and other plants. It is like a big pergola, which is fully opened to the elements in the summer and gets covered during the winter. I put the roof on a week ago to allow the plants to dry up a bit. I will probably put the sides and the door at some point in October. I use an oscillating fan to provide air movement. The heater is used only if it gets really cold.

Re: Xanthorrhoea glauca
Wow now that is a microclimate and a half a cracking construction it puts Andy Martins all year cover to shame...lol I think your Xanth has every chance of making it to a full head of leaves but just hope it does not flower as you may have to raise the roof

Re: Xanthorrhoea glauca
Andy, sadly neither me nor my husband are good with DIY projects:) Being close to the coast, we have high speed wind in the winter and I wanted to make sure the roof won't fly off. I knew exactly what I want and luckily I knew someone who can help me.
