What to do with Arisaema bulbs
Hi,
I've been given some Arisaema bulbs, not sure which species. I just wonder what I should be doing with them at this time of year. I have a courtyard garden where everything is in pots and containers. Is it OK to plat them into pots now and leave them out for the winter or should I be storing them somehow?
Thank you

Re: What to do with Arisaema bulbs
I found it difficult to keep them alive in my soil. Was a drainage issue . I have some that are loving being planted in a hypertufa pot and it gets really large. The drainage is good in that. I did try in regular pots but I had no success. Perhaps someone with green fingers may be able to advise you better

Re: What to do with Arisaema bulbs
Be wary of leaving Arisaema in pots left out over the winter. Even though many species are hardy, if the frost penetrates into the pot and any part of the tuber freezes, it will cause that part of the tuber to turn to mush which will then rot and quickly spread to the rest of the tuber. Some species are more forgiving than others. Really, if leaving them out all year they are best off in the ground, but clearly that won't be possible for you by the sounds of things.
If you can't plant them in the ground, you can either pot them up in a well drained compost mix and prevent the pot from freezing somehow, keeping them on the dry side. Or you can store the tubers in a cool, dark place before planting early spring. I store tubers in my attic in boxes of vermiculite.
