I dont know either. Seen them. One might be a Manzanita,Arbutus?- I did see tan seed balls on the ground The other,I've only seen of before. They are close to white foliage Eucalyptus. The Cereus cactus? funny to see that in a park.

The red bark is splendid, but I'm not sure it is any arbutus. May be Paul could say.

The eucalypt could be E.cinerea ?

Yes on the Eucalypt. I'm so used to seeing the young whippy ones..that this old and big plant threw me off.
I think the voting on the red bark is still not in!..too big for Manzanita and not right for Arbutus.

I would have thought one of the Manzanitas - don't some get big?

Do you grow any Arctostaphylos ?
In France finding them is almost impossible.

I don't Pierre, I think they look better with some space around them and my garden is crammed full!

Wild plants wont take summer rains or watering if you had bought a home with them in the country and wanted to blend them with garden plants. That said, plants nursery grown can exist with xeriscape plants we grow here like Aloe's. They do look spectacular with those red barks next to Pachypodiums!

I think the big red ones in Hayward are Manzanita's..but cant prove it. But they don't do much park planting anymore or for the last many years and I bet those plants go back 50+ years as original plantings when the park was created.
