Hurricane Ophelia
Well this is a turn up for the books I was just saying to Jackie the other day I am glad the UK does not get hurricanes. We have quite a benign climate compared to many but this may blow the cobwebs away for a few days. I think its time to stash a few potted plants away hopefully it will die down before it gets here I believe a category 2 storm at the moment.
Its also very strange it will hit 30 years to the day of the last major storm that wreaked havoc across the UK sadly killing 22 people.....fingers crossed!

Re: Hurricane Ophelia
Well, there was also the storm in 1990 as well, which caused almost as much damage.
But 1987 was the one that shook everyone up.

Re: Hurricane Ophelia
Reading on the German Wetternews that Ophelia has grown in strength and is now classified as a category 2 hurricane and close to 3 in strength. It has apparently caught out the models that thought it would weaken https://www.wetteronline.de/wetternews/2017-10-13-ho

Re: Hurricane Ophelia
Normally, I'd as soon eat my shorts as believe that Ireland would be under the gun of a major hurricane. This one may be for the books, forming into a Cat 3 so far north in relatively cool waters. They always peter out by the time they make in our way (34 N), so I was really surprised that this storm actually strengthened at the same latitude! Fascinating.
Batten down the hatches and cancel that trip to the beach.

Re: Hurricane Ophelia
I remember walking around London in 87 the morning after. Shocking. I remember feeling very scared in my flat in Reading during the storm, not having a clue as to what was happening outside. You could literally feel the pressure. I thought the windows were going to implode.
