Re: After Ophelia
Its sad to see the damage there Micheal. The way your garden is structured there, it would be difficult to build a shelter belt. Certainly not difficult to understand why you left Orpington for the spectacular views you have overlooking the bay which I can see in glimpses of your pics. Good to see all the arids you are growing there despite being on the wet and windy atlantic side. Its great see Metrosideros thriving there as well and I guess with any garden anywhere its about learning what plants can survive where.

Re: After Ophelia
Thanks Andy. Actually, we are on the dry side of the island, in the rain shadow of the island's highest hill, which is over 500' high. The island itself is on the drier side of Mizen Head- there is a reason why the sea area forecast zone is 'Fastnet to Lundy, and south Irish Sea'. Drought used to be a real problem in our garden, but in recent years we have had regular summer rain, which most of our xerics seem to enjoy. We have some cacti here that we brought all the way from Orpington, fourteen years ago. including a red Echinopsis bruchii that Paul might remember from there.
Today, I found some more damage caused by Brian's sustained gale, which lasted about 36 hours. This is not a bamboo that I would normally choose to harvest, but since the wind snapped so many of the new shoots, Blue Hooker is on the menu tonight!

Re: After Ophelia
I will try again. No use. Have I set off alarm bells with the common name of this bamboo?

Re: After Ophelia
I to am glad you are OK, unless you have been in a hurricane It is almost impossible to imagine, we had one in Wales a few years ago fortunately my house is very sheltered behind a rocky outcrop in the Mawddach estuary. My neighbour a mere 300 yards away, (we still use imperial in Wales) was not so lucky. She was also on the same rocky outcrop but sticks a bit further out, had around 250 trees blown down in her garden and had to pay a few pounds short of £20,000 to have them cut up and removed.

Hi MIchael
I wasn't far from you in September, but no time to call in. Glad you haven't received too much damage. Keep your end up!

Re: After Ophelia
Ophelia took away quite a lot of glass panes on the glazed section of our pergola protecting the arid bed but they've all been replaced now. Large shards of glass were embedded all over our neighbour's half acre lawn. Took a bit of clearing up. All trees re-righted now with the aid of a pick-up but unfortunately one Acacia Baileyana Purpurea was torn right up out of the ground. Those Acacias always seem to blow over in a storm, stakes or no stakes.

Re: After Ophelia
Sad to see all the damage Michael, we seem to go through unscathed here in Passage West. Loads of fallen trees all around Cork City. Really sad.

Re: After Ophelia
Jason, that's a sorry tale, but glad you were OK. All that timber would have been worth a bit here.
David, I'm glad H. hookerianus is doing well for you, it's an upright grower here though.
Nick, thanks, hope to see you next time.
Craig, glad you fared well, shame about the trees in Cork City. Hope that tall Eucalyptus cordata (next to wino Park) was OK. I still miss those Pseudopanax arboreus they cut down as part of the city centre improvements.

Re: After Ophelia
Kevin, that sounds awful- at least no one was on the lawn at the time!
