Calceolaria flexuosa
This Peruvian species is a very floppy scandent 'climber' to about 15ft. It has no ability to 'hang on' so in my hands unless it is tied in to a support it grows along the ground!
The only picture I can find on the web is period.
It was brought to the UK by Lobb and distributed by Veitch in the late nineteenth century. I can not find records of it after the first world war. It is in the RHS dictionary of gardening which continues to include plants lost to cultivation. They give it a very optimistic Z7 rating for hardiness.
I bought seed from of an unidentified Calceolaria which they describe thus:
Calceolaria sp. BK14514.10 Large vine to 15’+. Small, dark green simple leaves. Cascading inflorescence with hundreds of lemon yellow pouch flowers, a waterfall of brightness! Growing through shrubs and trees, cloud forest Cusco Dept., Peru, 10,000′. Z9b? Seed packet $4 (limited).
It flowered last year for the first time and RHS were not very helpful in trying to assign it to a species.
So I bought the and waited for flowers this year.
I am not good with a camera [which gives The RHS their best excuse for not giving me an ID!].
With flowers in one hand and the monograph in the other I think I am now confident that it is Calceolaria flexuosa subsp chrysocalyx.
Calceolaria flexuosa subsp chrysocalyx leaves
Calceolaria flexuosa subsp chrysocalyx flowers with hand for scale
The only 'in focus' picture of Calceolaria flexuosa subsp chrysocalyx.
For those interested the flower in the bottom left shows a side view confirming 'type IV corolla'. On dissection it has 'type 7 stamens'.
Material has been passed to , so there may be a commercial source next year. He may even have some in focus pictures!

Re: Calceolaria flexuosa
Thanks Chad! Great work identifying it. I think of Calceolaria as a classic small alpine garden plant. Often I visit the Sacred Succulents web site. I must have missed this offering. Did you receive many seeds? Good germination rate? Thanks! Also thanks to Charlie for the climbing photos!

Re: Calceolaria flexuosa
Ted,
As with most 'wild collected' seed the germination is variable.
In my hands I either get a full pot of seedlings or nothing at all!
Of the ones that came up [most of them]; there were always at least 6 seedlings, and in some pots 20 or so.
The Calceolaria are dust like seeds and gave an embarrassment of seedlings.
Several 'rare' things germinated and then I lost them. My fault not theirs.
I kept some 'neotropical blueberries' too warm, and then had slugs in the propagator.

Hi Chad, Just curious, which "neotropical blueberries" did you try? I fiddled around with a Cavendishia once but have been "blueberry-free" for a while now.

Re: Calceolaria flexuosa
Well Ted,
I try not to keep records of my failures!
As I recall, there were germinations of a Cavendishia, a Siphonandra and some old world Agapetes.
I don't recall the species though.
I won't be trying again.
I can't even keep Agapetes serpens alive here even when 'bought in' as a mature plant.
If I get the urge to try the family again I will need to perfect keeping the simple one alive first!
Chad.
