Toona sinensis flamingo
Its's probably one of the oldest plants in my garden being planted in 1995. Not really an "edge" plant but has behaved impeccably except to now. Started to note what initially looked like desiccation of the leaves now looks more sinister. The main central trunk appears to have lost all its leaves. Normal leaf growth appears on separate branches. Here's a pic of the plant during its colourful phase
After turning to normal green growth it has now started to rot? Interestingly a Lagerstroemia red imperator has lost all its leaves as well but this happened much earler. This plant though is in a pot. Anyhow sorry I digress. A pic of the Toona recently
Final pic
Weatherwise here absolutely no frost or cold weather. Rainfall minimal but fairly breezy to strong winds which initially brought my thoughts to desiccation. Any thoughts anyone?

Re: Toona sinensis flamingo
Thanks for at least replying Tim. I usually lose a small branch or so over the Winter period and only notice when spring growth appears but what's happened now is totally different. If there is no spring growth then the tree will have to go

If things die back ike that in leaf here I always suspect either Honey Fungus or Phytophera, fingers crossed its just wind scorch!

"Phytophthora"
Strange, but true.

Re: Toona sinensis flamingo
I'd say, either root rot (the spelling of Phytophthora is indeed, delightfully weird, though at least logically phonetic - more a case of it being a strange word, really) or a case where a containerized plant had knotted roots that slowly strangled themselves. A circumstance which could well have invited root rot organisms to be a secondary cause of morbidity and mortality.* An expert horticulturalist should be able to make a determination via simple plant necroscopy, i.e., digging up what's left. Was there an uncharacteristically heavy downpour, or period of rain, preceding this? * - best deadpan publication name ever, in my opinion: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morbidity ... kly_Report

Re: Toona sinensis flamingo
Hi David... I had a dry warm summer up to mid July and then became cooler with some precipitation but not excessive by any means and then became windy and quite dry in my area. The Lagerstroemia which is in a pot lost all its leaves as well. Never happened before

Re: Toona sinensis flamingo
Wow, hard to say. Is even a little bit of the Toona still alive?
NB Lagerstroemia stems seem incredibly dead when they are not in leaf. I just point this out because I assume it is in the 'plants seldom grown' category in the British Isles. Still if you closely examine them you will probably see they are still alive. They are just more brittle and dry seeming than most deciduous stems.
