Planting out a small Dypsis decipiens
Hi there Thought i would show you a peek at the rear of my house down the back yard where i am planting out the bank with some Palms. This whole area is weed matted, with decent sized holes for the Palms. I planted the Brahea armata about 18-months ago. The Chamaerops humilis was planted 2-years ago and the Brahea edulis was planted 3-days ago, while the Dippy was planted a few hours ago. Now i am no where near finished so a Chamaerops cerifera will be joining them later on, and maybe a Queen in the corner near the shed to give some rear height. Rocks and some small plants will be going in during the Summer, so i will be updating this as it progresses.

UPDATE: Sadly i lost the little Dypsis decipiens - I think i cooked it in the hot Summer sun we had last year. It was half dead before Winter even arrived.

Don't give up. I lost 3 before the last one has survived for 4 years now. My mistakes were: to plant it too small and not to do it on a raised bed. Did you plant it the size as in the picture? Mine is not much taller and only sets one leaf a year.

The key for decipiens is drainage. DRAINAGE, DRAINAGE
I plant out last spring a small plant in the garden and put out 2,5 leafs. It planted in a slope with drip irrigation. The soil is always moist and grow strong.

Heat doesn't bother them unless we are talking hottest low desert temperatures. I bet they like best sandy soils. If not the usual amended as best you can. I fear gophers and why I have over the year resisted this hardy and very tropical looking yet, solid looking palm.

Rod,what about the Beccariophoenix palms? Those get huge too. I would like to try Chambeyronia macrocarpa. Another that takes cool winters and mild summers. For you in a wet climate,Ceroxylons might grow like weeds. I like the idea of Dypsis decipiens in a C&S garden.. a good fit.
