Post Re: Holy Grail plants for 2018
Believe it or not, my holy grail plant is bog standard, run of the mill tetrapanax. I've tried numerous times to establish even a small piece and feel a bit miffed when people say they are having issues controlling it!
I've germinated seeds.....they died
I've been given roots.....they grew, got potted up, then they died
I've been given plants...they died a slow, painful death :(
I have no problem growing other araliaceae so why do I fail miserably with this?

Tetrapanax thrives in well draining soil. Mine turned into a ‘forest’. It receives 6 hours of sun from 8 to 14. Offshoots seem to root well if 80% of the leaf area is cut off and plant is placed in shade for a week or two.

I’m growing two forms:

Hi Tim....If proof was ever needed that Tetrapanax is root hardy. I got rid of mine as it was taking over my garden and blocking out light to other plants It is one of those plants that like Bamboo need a root barrier or a large garden. Mine grew in soil heaven ... on a slope and in imported sandy lime free soil
Even now the roots are throwing up strong new growth

I'll remove these in the spring time and if still alive will pot up and if Gary still wants one or two he's welcome to them.
