Optimum soil for Eucalyptus.
Not really sure if what I'm doing is right but I'm going to try three eucalyptus in the West Garden in a section that needs a bit of height to it.
They are E. Macrocarpa. E. Sturgissiana. E. Neglecta.
My question is: My soil is limey. Do I need to import acidic soil in order to give these trees their best chance starting off or do you think I'll get away with limey soil? It's virtually impossible to get acidic topsoil around here.
I intend to chop off the tops of any that get to fifteen or twenty feet. I don't need enormously tall trees; I like unusual and difficult to grow ones. Storm Ophelia flattened my Acacias.

There aren't many, but there are some Eucalypts that are adapted to lime soils. I found this list on an English nursery website that may be of interest to you...
And another...
And yet another...
And I know from personal experience that the Western Australian mallees do well in high pH soils, as does one of my favourites, the spectacular Corymbia ficifolia. Your idea of E. macrocarpa (a mallee itself) is a good one and should do well in your native soil.
They're out there, but just require a little research. Good luck!

Apparently its best to plant the eucalyptus at seedling stage and not when you get a 3ft plus stem. Restricting roots at this stage could not bode well for future growth especially in areas of strong winds.

Ian. That's good news about Macrocarpa but maybe not about the other two. I've already bought those three plants, ready to plant. I bought Macrocarpa and Sturgissiana because they're uncommon here and the Neglecta because of its leaves. Thanks very much for the lists.
Andy. They're in airpots so, hopefully, should be good to go. (when I get the right soil.)
