A few weeks ago we visited Denmark we were pleasantly surprised to find it had a botanic garden so here are a few shots of the impressive glass houses. The idea of a botanic garden in Copenhagen dates back to 1600 but this the 4th such garden which dates back to 1874 when the glass houses were opened to the public 274 years after the founding of the first botanical garden. Amorphophallus titanum Angiopteris Did not get the i.d on this fern below? Cordyline stricta How is your Danish Rhapis excelsa The cycads were awesome E.villosus below Dioon edule var imbricatum A fruiting Cycas rumphii front below and Zamia lindenii rear Loved this Ceratozamia mexicana This did not look like the middle of Copenhagen but more a Costa Rican cloud forest One for Chris e Philodendrum squamiferum very neat leaf stalk. Livistona chinensis The biggest cycas in the glasshouse was this Cycas circinallis it was a monster stretching up into the top of the highest part of the glasshouse Caryota mitis Who had the idea first London (Kew) or Denmark a fab spiral staircase Doryanthus palmeri Spot the automatic closing curtains all around the glass house side and roof Philodendron gloriosum Dracaena umbraculifera not sure if its the correct name but it seems to be on the red list Annoyingly I could not find/know what this was below...anyone? Flowers from? We used to grow Globba's I wonder what happened there then Meryta denhamii and Wollemia pine This plant below said Jatrophe integerrima The end greenhouse had some super ferns/ plants in it slightly cooler than the humid palm house seen here below Loved this it said Piper arboreum but its not its probably that dead stick...anyone? Platycerium willinckii Maybe Myriocarpa longipes Above all the ferns you have Clerodendrum splendens flowering As we walked along I thought I had quite an understanding of lots of different plants till I came to this part of the glasshouse I started never heard of it never heard of it etc etc So anyone recognise any of those? This Rhipsalis pilocarpa looked like it was just growing in moss Just as we were leaving through the most humid part Jackie spotted this leaf So we thought I wonder if it flowers .......Oh my does it flower. Obviously its a Gurania makoyana just a jungle cucumber.....I can see Chad flicking through the seed catalogues as we speak. Short We can certainly recommend a visit to Denmark though [/size]you will probably not be getting a suntan! |

Thanks for posting the pictures Kev, you certainly get about. My weekend away recently was in Gloucester. I did not spot any exotics but they had some nice castles and steam railways. John |

Hi Kev... great pics of the glasshouses. Those ants on your last pic reminded me of the Eden project in the main dome. They were everywhere. I guess nothing caught your eye outside in the main gardens? |

Thanks for the pics, Kev. What a great place! Gone from 'never heard of it' to 'must see' in the space of 10 minutes. |

I'm guessing the mystery plant is either Fever tree or Ficus pseudopalma. The mystery rock a iron meteor. Its even getting rusty. Greenhouses are among man's greatest inventions. I mean that. |
