Oh dear! Poor Thai Giant - any advice?
Bought this Thai Giant Sept and now in kitchen due to the temps outside but is looking rather sad! I thought that the plant was too small to try to keep the corm dry over winter (never done it before either as new to tropical) so am watering it and trying to keep it going. Can anyone advise as to the best plan of action please?
Thanks

Is that a kind of Colocasia?

Hi David
Yes it's a very large one when grown in it's natural conditions but I fear the hard part will be getting it through the winter. Do you think I should try to keep it growing inside the house or cut off the leaves and lift the corm to put in dry compost in the garage and induce dormancy for over the winter? Not lifted it so do not know how big it is though! I googled it and it is a monster!!
Cheers

Don't know about everyone else, but I have a total 'mare trying to keep colocasias going over winter. Don't know if it's the reduced light or the dry, indoor air, but be careful with the amount of watering. I personally would bite the bullet and lift it to be sure it's not over watered. Mix up compost/perlite 50/50 or 60/40. Replant but don't water. Don't let it totally dry out. if it does go dormant, hey ho, wait til spring to get it going again.

yeah....moisture is an issue in cooler temps... basically if it is growing, water it but sparingly.
If not keep it dry, they are pretty tough when kept dry but like Castor beans,Brugmansia and Elephant ear plants, they just dont enjoy being inside.

Thanks for the advice, I will try that and see how it goes. I agree, I think it is too wet and it is definitely not growing. So far my burgundy stem in the cool greenhouse is looking really healthy though and quite big but I have read these are easier so we will see come spring. It's all a steep learning curve!
Cheers

If you check my post Tim, the purple leafed C. is doing well outside so don't give up. I keep my Alocasia in the greenhouse and fairly dry in winter, just watering occasionally. Don't worry too much it'll take off come the warmer weather.
