Strange looking tree in Christchurch. Any clues?
I saw this tree in town the other day, quite big leaves (maybe 20 cm long), somewhat tropical looking. And a very strange red ... flower?
Anyone know what this is?

Looks like a Magnolia, perhaps M. campbellii. That's a seedpod. Nice species.

I was as certain as could be the plant was Amaranthus caudatus, Love-Lies-Bleeding. But then I saw it was described as a tree.

Yes a Magnolia. I have a couple that have the same seeds.
