This thread is devoted to Nitmiluk National Park: Katherine Gorge and Edith Falls Firstly the photogenic Katherine Gorge: the native rather wispy Livistona inermis freshwater mangrove Barringtonia acutangula Now the lovely Edith Falls At last we got to Darwin. These are views from our hotel I didn't see anything particularly interesting in Darwin city and didn't have time to check out the botanic gardens; however, I have more than enough photos from Townsville palmetum to compensate. Before that we still have to savour other Top End delights: Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks |

Sorry about the smaller pictures but my poor old computer keeps breaking down trying to upload full size images |

I'm just experimenting with sizes that seems to be an acceptable compromise |

Estuarine crocodiles are curious creatures, so this buoy is installed in Katherine Gorge to test for bite marks or scratches. There is a rocky bar downstream from Katherine that crocs don't cross in the dry season because they don't like the feel of the rocks on their underbelly. However, they do cross it in the wet season and sometimes get trapped in the gorge when the water level goes down. Then they have to be identified and removed. There are plenty of freshwater crocs in Katherine Gorge but they are considered harmless. We didn't see any, because in November the water is warm enough that they can stay submerged. |

"There are plenty of freshwater crocs in Katherine Gorge but they are considered harmless." I wouldn't want to test that assumption! Thanks for these pictures, they've been very interesting. Though in the very limited time I had, I'm glad I stuck to the lush, wet, and 'temperate' parts of AU. |
