Re: Cold weather in the UK
I've spent most of today digging a pathway for our cars out of our hilly close we live in. No power in our village for most of the day. Most of my plants have been flattened by the weight of the snow, the worst being a lantern tree Crinodendron hookerianum which split the main trunk. Some of my roof covers capsized under the weight of the snow particularly when placed on an incline. I'd guess that we had 8 inches of lying snow. Some cold nights ahead on this snowfield now

Re: Cold weather in the UK
Frost and snow not arrived here and not forecast yet.
As usual the wind does more damage.
Here is the [disputed name] Dahlia last week [even with a few flowers!].
And today.
Every year is 'odd' in its own way, but here we have yet to start winter and yet I have 'main crop' snowdrops already.
My commiserations to those of you in England. Please don't send your current weather down to the South West!

-8.5 this morning and it rose to -2.5 this afternoon.
Went out for tea and it had dropped to -7 and when we came home it was -8.

Re: Cold weather in the UK
As Chad says no frost or snow yet here either but its far from pleasant, strong cold cutting winds icy showers. Things still look good with wall shelter but who cares I have the lurgey and have intention of going outside to appreciate them

Re: Cold weather in the UK
It's only just dipped below freezing a couple of times here so far, and everything seems fine except the Iochroma whose leaves go black and shrivel up at the slightest frost (I'm probably pushing my luck with it, but it came back from the dead last year). Tonight though, -2C is forecast here in South London, with lows of -12C in rural areas!
The Cyatheas are wrapped up and I've draped fleece over anything else that's delicate, other than the bougainvillea, Musa 'Orinoco' and Heliconia schiediana which get to spend the night inside the house...
Good luck everyone!

Thanks for that Jonathan that 2 of the 12c is right over our house Just been outside and thrown the last of our old duvets over some more plants hopefully this will suffice for the coldest night of the year.

Re: Cold weather in the UK
Yes Kev, that's the meadow here. If we get any snow it's going to flatten the daffs. Too cold to work out there this afternoon - I was supposed to be planting Hedychium but I think the moment has passed.
