Re: Cold weather in the UK
I remember Oxford in '63. For three months, snow piled up high on the pavements. It was black in the end. In my own garden this winter I've already lost a couple of plants with the cold and I'd escaped unscathed since Dec 2010.

Re: Cold weather in the UK
We've missed out on the snow here, which is good as I am totally unprepared for it. But I do feel cheated out of a spot of sledging up on the moor!
Instead it is crazy windy. 70mph recorded not too far away.

Re: Cold weather in the UK
All the shrubs are flattened here under the weight of the snow. That includes two Euonymus and a Viburnum none of which I'm particularly keen on but I've shaped them like a mushroom so that they provide good and quite dry winter shelter for various potted bulbs and tubers. Vestia foetida is flat which is an annoyance as it was budding up nicely for next year. At the moment the bath and the shower are full of plants (Furcraea, Manfreda elongata, Tradescantia purpurea etc) that I'm trying to dry out a little because they need to go in the garage now because of this on the Beeb................
I used to joke about the beeb weather but for the last few months it has been pretty much on the money, even on timing. About the only thing that it got wrong was the "heatwave" that we were supposed to get a few weeks ago. What sites do you guys swear by?

Re: Cold weather in the UK
The snow is unusually wet and heavy, probably because the temperature is above 0ºC. About 2cm of snow has collapsed the whole Iris confusa patch, stakes, wire and all, and all of the Palms and Bamboos are nearly prostrate.
The forecast has been changed dramatically twice in the past 16 hours, first to tell us that it would snow (about the same time as it started) and then to revise tomorrow's forecast from 4ºC and sunny during the day, -1ºC tomorrow night, to 2ºC during the day and -4ºC, briefly, tomorrow night. That would be the lowest temperature here since 2010/11. I'll have to spend a lot of tomorrow bringing plants in - which I would have done yesterday if the snow had been forecast.
