Charles Wychgel RIP
It is with great sadness that I report that my friend Charles Wychgel died last Friday after a short battle with bowel cancer. Charlie was a true plantsman – he had one of the finest collections of palms in the Algarve but also a great breadth and depth of knowledge of all types of plants, especially cycads. I’ve known him for 20 years – we corresponded ever since he became one of my customers back in the day when I ran my little nursery – but got to meet him properly just 5 years ago when I visited him in the Algarve and we embarked upon a road trip around Portugal together. I went over to see him every year since. He was a dyed in the wool ‘grumpy old git’ with an acerbic and sharp wit and would generally hold court on every topic under the sun. He also had a heart of gold and was great company – I will miss him.

Re: Charles Wychgel RIP
Paul, So sorry to hear this news. We visited Charles several times over the last decade or so and were always knocked out by his fabulous garden and amazing plants. He was always such a hospitable and generous guy and we always came away with one or two off-sets of rare plants for our own holiday place in the Algarve. Sincere condolences to his partner and family. He will be missed.

Re: Charles Wychgel RIP
How sad to hear I will miss Charles contributions on the various forums he used to frequent. We were lucky enough to visit him at his wonderful place in the Algarve and I have lots of his palms growing here at our place a very generous guy. We were also had a few days with him and the European Palm society guys visiting Rome.....fun times!

Re: Charles Wychgel RIP
I noticed that he had stopped posting over the last year or so. He's missed by plants people world over.

Re: Charles Wychgel RIP
So sorry to hear of this. I did not know Charles personally, but always followed his posts closely, especially concerning cycads. I wish the best for his family and friends.

Re: Charles Wychgel RIP
Merci d'avance

Re: Charles Wychgel RIP
I find your remarks to be crass and insensitive. We have lost a friend, not a source of plants.

Re: Charles Wychgel RIP
Very sad news. I had seen him post on the odd forum in the past but didn't know him. He was obviously extremely knowledgeable and sounds like a lovely chap. May he rest in peace.
