Nice combo if all were in one yard. The Piro is a beauty when I see a large growth of it...but rarely is it in private yards. It was far more popular years-decades- ago with city plantings. I've seen climb huge cement walls- for a 50,maybe 100' foot runs.

You are quite right. THIS is plumbago
Stan: My Pyrostegia is planted in the ground, outside. It is 10 mts long. It flowers every year from late November till early May. This year has been ahead of time. Look at green buds on October the 10th.
This is from November 17th
Still with leaves: Jacaranda
Bauhinia variegata (mine)
Thunbergia grandiflora
Iris??? I´m not sure. Any guess? It always blooms in winter
Iresines
Tibouchina still in flower
Dombeya wallichii about to flower
And today´s crop: grapefruit. Before it smashes against the floor. They are too ripe

Re: Some winter colour at 43ºN
Looking at the net to try and get a feel for Cambria...very similar temps to the bay area. But,Cambria is a much wetter and cloudier climate. The rainfall is more then double Hayward. One funny fact? One of the guides describe Cambria's summer ocean temps as "cold at 68-70f". Are they kidding me? The waters here near San Francisco never rise above 60f ,only if its an El Nino if that.

Cantabria and Asturias are IMO one of the most beautiful place of Europe with an excellent climate!

Re: Some winter colour at 43ºN
One did point out how mild it is so far north and that the mountains amplify the mild jet stream blocking storms from the far north. I find myself more attracted to the Malta's and Azores and Canary,Taz,..the whole even temperature thing rather then hot in summer and cold in winter. I spotted young coconuts on Funchal. Looked healthy and made me wonder how that long established island doesn't have more tall coco palms? Maybe even Funchal is seeing a warming up..

Re: Some winter colour at 43ºN
Hi, Ives: Both our climates are just "mild" I would say. Ours is too rainy sometimes, and not sunny. Bayonne enjoys 200 hours of sunshine more than us.

Re: Some winter colour at 43ºN
Hi, Stan: You better believe the sea temperature in summer here. Average for July, August is 22ºC, ( the closer to France, the higher the sea temps) with peaks of 24º, 25ºC for some days when southerly winds blow hard, and air temps easily reach 35º along the coast and over 40º a little farther inland. In winter it doesn´t go below 12º, 13ºC. Here it is too rainy. An average 0f 1.200 litres year round. With places reaching 2.000 litres. Mountain ranges all along the north coast of Spain don´t block storms coming from the north, but stop low pressures (rain) from crossing over them. That´s why we suffer endless rainy days, specially in winter. And clouds in summer. Temperature range is 10º here, and 8º in the Canary islands. I think the reason for not being tall coconuts either in Madeira or in the Canaries, is cultural. They do grow bananas there (for many years now) because it was and is still commercially profitable. Coconuts need more heat and rain, and the Canaries are almost desertic, except for the northern faces of the islands (but, again, less heat than in the southern faces). Most coconuts have been planted for the last 40 years. Before that, I only knew of 2 big ones. One growing in the public garden "García de Sanabria" city capital, and the other in an old bar in Las Caletillas, near Candelaria, brought by the owner from Guinea (Africa) in the sixties, which had mature cocos in it, on the south coast.

Re: Some winter colour at 43ºN
Very nice mid winter color. I have a young A.ferox. It was just "small claw" shape 2 years ago. Looks like an Aloe now. Love that Red Cloak of your's. The whole range of that thrive in San Francisco's cool summers.Wild species Fuchshia's that also have that look with large soft leaves. Dippea splendens is another cloudforest plant. Thats a nice collection of plants enjoying the wet climate. I've killed a few in the eastbay- one hot day and lack of water..they die.
