Tim Pyner RIP
A lot of readers here will know Tim, who sadly died yesterday after a short struggle with a particularly aggressive cancer. He was just 59.
Tim was one of the mainstays of the British Pteridological Society - his energy and enthusiasm knew no bounds and he was the driving force behind most of the local meetings and many international trips. Anyone who met Tim will recall his staggering intellect as he was blessed with an almost photographic memory, digesting the flora of each country he was about to visit. You could almost hear those keys unfolding in his head as he examined a specimen in the field - his ever present magnifying lens deployed constantly. But it wasn't just ferns that held his attention - he knew and understood most plant groups in an effortless way that was beyond the reach of most. He was actually an avid reader of this forum although I don't think he ever posted. Those of us lucky enough to count him amongst our friends knew him as the big-hearted, gentle, generous, funny and kindest man. Rest in peace my friend.

Re: Tim Pyner RIP
Taken too soon sadly I did not get to know Tim but it's pleasing to know he used to enjoy reading GOTE.
Condolences to his family.

Re: Tim Pyner RIP
A group of Dutch fern society members visited his magnificent garden and Tim visited Holland a few times. His knowledge of ferns and other plants was more than impressive. His influence, enthusiasm, help and knowledge extended beyond the British pteridological society (BPS). He will be so missed.

Re: Tim Pyner RIP
How terribly sad, first Charles Wychgel, now Tim. I knew Tim through various BPS meetings and we both sat on the RHS Tender Fern AGM forum. As Paul has already said, he had an encyclopaedic knowledge of ferns and other plants and never seemed stuck for naming any plant he came across. He was a very nice guy and also very generous - he would always bring along or split plants if you expressed an interest. Heartfelt sympathy to his family.

Re: Tim Pyner RIP
What a great, great shame. I knew Tim was very ill and didn't have long with us, but I didn't think it would be this quick. I'd see him once or twice a year at the nursery and he was a great pleasure to be around. He had the time and inclination to identify everything correctly; rather than assume the name a plant came with was correct, he would check it and the amount of ferns in cultivation with incorrect ID's turned out to be quite astonishing.
A kind, gentle, generous man. I shall miss him.

Re: Tim Pyner RIP
One of our (The Dutch Fern Society) main contacts with the BPS, a fern- and general plant guru, and over the year a friend, I will miss Tim a lot! He introduced me to some very nice gardens and people in the UK, and to a whole new array of plants! Always willing to help and very generous with trading or just giving parts or spare plants away for those who showed interest!
After retiring, he traveled a lot and did a lot of the things he liked, both with his wife, and pure in botanising. Sadly he couldn't enjoy it as long as I think he deserved! I guess we can learn the lesson of not postponing things to much here again... Live your life and do the things you want to do, before it's to late..
Kind regards, Remko Beuving.
