Yuccas can cause serious ear injuries:

Not a yucca but I did this exact same thing with a Phoenix canariensis - I was carrying something in both hands, walked too close and got a leaflet down my ear - punctured my eardrum. Bloody well hurt as well!!

Nasty. Dangerous things!

I was lucky not to lose the sight in one of my eyes a few years ago after being impaled by a Phormium leaf whilst weeding. A sliced eyeball and a trip to A&E is not recommended. I always wear goggles when weeding or working around Yuccas or Phormiums these days. I must admit, damage to the ears has never occurred to me.

I nearly bled to death when weeding around the puya
Yucca spikes in the kidney area is a pain I do not wish to relive. Best not to walk backwards when pruning stuff near them

I once leaned over and got a scratched cornea from the tip of a Sansevieria - extremely painful.
I went to hospital imagine the scene -
Nurse - Well sir what happened?
Me - I was poked in the eye by my Mother-in-Laws tongue!
My progress through A&E was marked by much hilarity from the nursing staff as my notes were passed round!!
I may add this is a true story!!

I try to remember to wear glasses or sunglasses whenever I'm gardening or working in the greenhouse. It's certainly not fool proof but it goes some way to protecting eyes if not ears.

Perhaps I need to wear headphones too?

Nicknamed " Spanish dagger" for a reason. I believe the Spaniards planted Yuccas outside st. Augustine in Florida to deter attackers.

Mahonia leafs can be very painful too, but too small to cause such major injuries. I never liked picking old leafs up, even with gloves.

Indeed they are. I got fed up kneeling on dead Mahonia leaves and so dug my plant up!
