This is -pretty sure- our native Bay tree ,Umbellularia california. I sometimes think its nice looking dormant. Has a great form.

Umbellularia californica is evergreen when grown in Cornwall; and called 'The Headache Tree'. Sniffing the bruised leaves is reported to cause headaches [I haven't tried that] and tree surgeons say that doing work on it leads to a severe headache and unsteadiness [again I haven't tried that!].

The deciduous skeleton that you show is wonderful.

It is notably pachycaulous right out to the terminal twigs and has startlingly bark.

Could it be Aesculus californica?

Or a fig of some sort? A young Ficus carica for example?

Chad.

THATS IT. I must have had a senior moment 5 years before I'm a senior. I should have got it right to start. Like getting the back of my hand wrong.
Thanks
